Women's Downhill - Cortina d'Ampezzo Event 2

Women’s Downhill – Cortina d’Ampezzo Event 2

We are back at Cortina d’Ampezzo for the 2nd Downhill race at this venue and the 5th Downhill race of this season.

Ramona Siebenhofer is coming into this event as the winner of the last Downhill race at Cortina d’Ampezzo, which was the 1st win and the 3rd podium of her career. With the 3rd place in Val Gardena, Siebenhofer has now 2 podium finishes this season, which puts her at the 3rd spot in the Downhill standings with 220 points, which is only 28 behind the leader Nicole Schmidhofer.  Ramona Siebenhofer bested Ilka Stuhec yesterday by an impressive 0.40s, while she was 0.46s faster than 3rd placed Stephanie Venier. The 3rd place for Stephanie Venier marked her 3rd podium finish and her 1st Downhill podium in her career. The last time she stood on the podium was on 25th February 2017 in Crans-Montana in a Super-G race. On the other side, Ilka Stuhec 2nd place is not as bad as it seems, as she has proven to be a top competitor in the Downhill events after the return from her injury last season. As of now, she is only 10 points behind Nicole Schmidhofer in the Downhill standings, which means that another great performance from her would see her climbing to the top spot in the Downhill standings. Lindsey Vonn finished only 15th in her 1st race after returning to the slopes, over 1 second too slow for the top spot (+1.19). The race itself ended with no complications, despite the fact the start was lowered due to heavy snowfall during the night.

The next race as mentioned will take place at the same venue, where some ladies will have a chance to improve their performance from Friday’s race whereas others will hope to perform just as well as they did. With her win on Friday, Ramona Siebenhofer is one of the 2 favourites to win once more, alongside Ilka Stuhec. As of now, the odds offered on them are 4.18 on Ilka, while Siebenhofer odds are at 4.66.

This season, Ramona Siebenhofer has finished on the podium 2 times. She was 3rd in Val Gardena Downhill race and won the most recent Downhill event in Cortina d’Ampezzo. She also finished 4th in Super-G race in Lake Louise and 6th in the Downhill race on December 1st in Lake Louise. With those performances, she is currently 3rd in the Downhill standings only 28 points behind Nicole Schmidhofer and 18 points behind Ilka Stuhec. Last season she finished 12th and 4th in Cortina. While her 4th place finish last season seems impressive, she was still well over a second (+1.25) behind the winner Lindsey Vonn.
